Recent linguistic studies have increasingly revisited the methodologies of early Arabic scholars, resulting in numerous critiques that often lack solid linguistic grounding and overlook the distinctive nature of Arabic. In this context, Minhāj al-Bulaghāʾ wa Sirāj al-Udabāʾ by Ḥāzim al-Qarṭājānī emerges as a model of rigorous organization and rational inquiry. This research examines the methodological structure of the book to highlight its scholarly value within the history of Arabic linguistic thought.
The study employs an inductive analytical approach, exploring the book’s composition through its title and authorial motives, structural divisions, technical terminology, deployment of textual evidence, and sources.
The findings reveal that al-Qarṭājānī’s work is characterized by precise conceptual hierarchy, logical coherence, and methodological discipline that align closely with principles of modern critical theory. It demonstrates that classical scholarship, when examined through appropriate linguistic criteria, contains advanced methodological frameworks often overlooked by contemporary criticism.
Accordingly, the research recommends a re-evaluation of early Arabic linguistic and critical methods using sound linguistic standards while recognizing the unique features of Arabic, with greater focus on exemplary works such as that of al-Qarṭājānī in advancing modern scholarship.
