Ibn Malik’s Stance in Sharḥ al-Tas-heel and al-Kafiah al-Shafiah toward Ibn Burhan’s Grammatical Views in Sharḥ al-Luma`: An Analytical Grammatical Study

Abstract

This study examines Ibn Malik’s stance in Sharh Al Tas-heel and Al Kafiah Alshafiah concerning the views of Ibn Burhan as stated Sharḥ al-Luma`. The importance of the study lies in bringing together the contributions of two prominent grammarians and examining the relationship between their positions. It aims to compile the Ibn Burhan’s grammatical opinions as reflected in Ibn Malik’s Sharḥ al-Tas-heel and al-Kafiah al-Shafiah, pointing out Ibn Malik’s stance towards them, and analyzing these stances grammatically. The research employes on both the descriptive and the analytical approaches. The study is divided into an introduction and a preface which provides biographical notes on both scholars, followed by three sections The first section discusses the points in which Ibn Malik agrees with Ibn Burhan, comprising seven issues. The second section deals with Ibn Malik’s objections to Ibn Burhan’s views, also presented in seven issues. The third section   provides an analytical evaluation of Ibn Malik’s overall position toward Ibn Burhan’s grammatical views and consists of three subsections The conclusion states the findings of the research, most notably, the harmony of grammatical thoughts between Ibn Burhan and Ibn Malik, as they agreed on many opinions and choices including the strong intellectual harmony between the two scholars, as they agreed on many grammatical positions. The study also highlights the importance of Ibn Burhan’s Sharḥ al-Luma` for Ibn Malik, as it served as a major grammatical source from which he cited extensively.
