Abstract

A sentence consists of two main components: form and meaning. In this research, the discussion focuses on the meaning, and more specifically on the so-called “usefulness,” as ancient grammarians have named it. It refers to the communicative purpose of speech, in contrast to form, which has already received considerable attention from grammarians. Hence, this research examines various aspects of the concept usefulness in the sentence, presents both the classical and modern grammarians’ points of views, and concludes with the most important findings.
